      The effect of stellate ganglion block (SGB) on various kinds of oro- facial pain were studied on 171 patients. SGB was performed at C6 vertebra.
       In 71 TMJ and mastcatory muscle pain cases, pain relief was observed significantly more by the application of SGB and splints (excellent≒good 75%) than by splints alone (60%) by 聿2 test (p～0.01). In most of the patients treated by SGB, pain relief was observed right after the first SGB, in the patients treated by splints, however, it took several days. SGB improved jaw opening distance at once not only in the patients with myofascial pain, but also with temporomandibular joint internal dearrangement. In trigeminal mononeuropathy cases, SGB improved spontaneous pain relief (14/17 cases), but in instances of hyperalgesia, 11 cases examined did not show any relief. In acute infections (i. e. postextractive infection and acute pulpitis), SGB did not relieve pain (poor : 4/5), for postextractive pain without infections, however, SGB improved pain relief (more than fair : 5/6). In atypical facial pain/ glossodynia, 12 in 17 cases showed pain relief.
      SGB is effctive for various kinds of oro-facial pain. It should be performed with antiinfective therapy in acute odontogenic infections.
